The solution (x, y) is (12, 8)

Given:

4x + 3y = 72 -----(1)

x + 3y = 36 -----(2)

To find:

Find the solution (x, y)

Solution:

To find x and y values by elimination method

Subtract (2) from (1)

⇒ 4x + 3y - (x + 3y ) = 72 - 36

⇒  4x + 3y - x - 3y = 36

⇒  3x = 36

⇒  x = 36/3 = 12

Now substitute x = 12 in (2)

(2) ⇒ 12 + 3y = 36

⇒ 3y = 24

⇒  y = 8

Therefore,  the solution (x, y) = (12, 8)
