Recall that:

Inverse proportion is the relationship between two variables such that the increase in one will cause a proportional decrease in the other.

  • more men = fewer days needed
  • fewer men = more days needed

Given:

5 men = 12 days

Find:

Number of men needed to build the wall in 10 days.

Find the man-day for the job:

Man-Days = number of men needed x number of days needed

Man-Days = 5 x 12

Man-Days = 60

Find the number of men needed to build the wall in 10 days:

Man-Day = 60

Days = 10

Number of men needed = 60 ÷ 10

Number of men needed = 6

Answer: 6 men area needed to build the wall in 10 days.
