y= 2x-50

2y=x+17 (transpose)

2y= 4x-100

2y=x+17

subtract

3x-117=0

3x-=117

x=117/3=39

x=39

to find y

2y-17=39

y=56/2=28

y=28

to verify

2x-50=28

78-50=28

2y-17=39

56-17=39

Therefore verified the greater number is 39 and the smaller one is 28
