Rate of diffusion of gases is given by the formula :
rate 1 / rate 2 = √ M2 / M1
Where R1 and R2 is rate of diffusion of two gases , M1 and M2 is corresponding molecular weight(MW).
So rate of diffusion of Hydrogen(MW=2) and oxygen(MW=32) can be calculated as:
Rate H2 / Rate O2 = √ 32 / √2
= √16
= 4
It means Hydrogen diffuse 4 times faster than Oxygen.
Now 50 ml. of H2 is diffise in 20 min.
∴ 40 ml. of H2 will diffuse in 20/50 x 40 = 16 min.
So 40 ml. of O2 will takes time = 16 x 4 = 64 min.
rate 1 / rate 2 = √ M2 / M1
Where R1 and R2 is rate of diffusion of two gases , M1 and M2 is corresponding molecular weight(MW).
So rate of diffusion of Hydrogen(MW=2) and oxygen(MW=32) can be calculated as:
Rate H2 / Rate O2 = √ 32 / √2

∴ 40 ml. of H2 will diffuse in 20/50 x 40 = 16 min.
So 40 ml. of O2 will takes time = 16 x 4 = 64 min.
