5x+7y = 22---eq.1

7x+5y = 14---eq.2

multiple the eq.2 by 5 and eq.1 by 7

=> 35x+49y = 154 ---eq.3

=> 35x+25y = 70---eq.4

now subtract eq. 4 from eq.3

=> 35x+49y - 35x-25y = 154 - 70

=> 24y = 84

=> y = 3.5

now put the value of y in eq.1

=> 5x+7(3.5) = 22

=> 5x = 22-24.5

=> 5x = -2.5

=> x = -0.5

so that x + y = -0.5+3.5

=> x+y = 3
