5x + 4y = 14 --- (1)

and

4x + 5y = 13 --- (2)

Multiply (1) by 5 and multiply (2) by 4 to solve for x

25x + 20y = 70 --- (3)

16x + 20y = 52 --- (4)

9x = 18 [by subtracting (4) from (3)]

----------------------------------

=> x = 2

substituting this in (1)

5(2) + 4y = 14

y = (14 - 10)/4

=> y = 1

Therefore x - y = 2 -1 = 1
