Solution :

The given AP is

6, x, y, - 1

Taking the first three terms, we get

2x = 6 + y

⇒ y = 2x - 6 .....(i)

and taking the last three terms, we get

2y = x - 1

⇒ 2 (2x - 6) = x - 1, by (i)

⇒ 4x - 12 = x - 1

⇒ 4x - x = 12 - 1

⇒ 3x = 11

x = 11/3

From (i), we get

y = 2 (11/3) - 6

⇒ y = 22/3 - 6

⇒ y = (22 - 18)/3

y = 4/3
