7x + 3y = 11 \: \: \: a \\ 3x + 7y = - 1 \: \: \: b \\ \\ subtracting \: a \: by \: b \\ \\ 7x \: + \: 3y = 11 \\ - 3x + 7y = - 1 \\ \\ we \: get \\ \\ 4x - 4y = 12 \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: c \\ \\ dividing \: c \: by \: 4 \: we \: get \\ \\ x - y = 3
