Let the number be x

Four times a number = 4x

8 added to 4 times a number = 4x + 8

The result is 2 less than 5 times the number = 5x - 2


According to the question,

4x + 8 = 5x - 2

➾ 4x - 5x = -2 - 8

➾ -x = -10

By cancelling the minus (-) sign

➾ x = 10

Verification :-

4x + 8 = 5x - 2

➾ 4x - 5x = -2 - 8

➾ -x = -10
