Let us take eight less than a certain number on the left hand side (L.H.S)

Thus L.H.S = x-8

Let us take two more than three times the number on the right hand side(R.H.S)

Thus R.H.S=3x+2

Given that eight less than a certain number is equal to two more than three times the number

L.H.S=R.H.S

x-8=3x+2

x-3x=2+8

-2x=10

Thus x=10/-2

x=-10/2

x=-5

Hence x=-5
