Given : 9 liters out of 81 liters of a solution of salt and water is replaced by pure water to obtain a 48%  concentrated salt solution,

To Find : What was the initial concentration of the salt in the solution?

Solution:

Solution = 81 Litre

Water = 9W  litre

Salt = 81 - 9W

in 9 Litres

water = (9/81)9W = W

Salt = (9/81)(81 - 9W) = 9 - W

replaced by pure water

Water = 9W - W  + 9  = 8W + 9

Salt = 81 - 9W - (9 - W)  = 72 - 8W

48%  concentrated salt solution, => 100 x (72 - 8W)/81  = 48

=> 100  x 8  ( 9 - W) = 81 x 48

=> 100  x 8  ( 9 - W) = 81 x 48

=> 9 - W = 4.86

=> W = 4.14

Salt = 81 - 9W = 81 - 9*(4.14) = 43.74

Salt %  = (43.74/81) * 100

= 54 %

initial concentration of the salt in the solution = 54 %
