Given:

a-1/(a-3)=5

To find:

If a-1/(a-3) = 5 then find the value (a-3)2+1/(a-3)2

Solution:

From given, we have,

a-1/(a-3)=5

a - 1 = 5(a - 3)

a - 1 = 5a - 15

15 -1 = 5a - a

14 = 4a

7 = 2a

∴ a = 7/2

Now consider,

(a-3)2+1/(a-3)2

= [(7/2) - 3]² + 1/ [(7/2) - 3]²

we get, 7/2 - 3 = [7 - (2 × 3)]/2 = (7 - 6)/2 = 1/2

∴ we have, (a - 3)² = 1/2

= (1/2)² + 1/ (1/2)²

= 1/4 + 1 / (1/4)

= 1/4 + 4

= [1 + (4 × 4)]/4

= [1 + 16]/4

= 17/4

∴ (a-3)2+1/(a-3)2 = 17/4
