Hi ,

It is given that,

a - 1/a = 4 ----( 1 )

do the square of equation ( 1 ) , we get

( a - 1/a )² = 4²

a² + 1/a² - 2 = 16

a² + 1/a² = 18---( 2 )

again do the square of equation ( 2 ) , we get

( a² + 1/a² )² = 18²

a⁴ + 1/a⁴ + 2 = 324

a⁴ + 1/a⁴ = 322

I hope this helps you.
