Answer :-

a² - 1/a² = 9√85

Solution :-

a - 1/a = 9----(1)

First find the value of a + 1/a

We know that

(x + y)² = (x - y)² + 4xy

Here

• x = a

• y = 1/a

By substituting the values

⇒ (a + 1/a)² = (a - 1/a)² + 4(a)(1/a)

⇒ (a + 1/a)² = (a - 1/a)² + 4

⇒ (a + 1/a)² = (9)² + 4

⇒ (a + 1/a)² = 81 + 4

⇒ (a + 1/a)² = 85

⇒ a + 1/a = √85 ---(2)

From (1) & (2)

(a + 1/a)(a - 1/a) = √85(9)

⇒ (a + 1/a)(a - 1/a) = 9√85

⇒ (a)² - (1/a)² = 9√85

[Because (x + y)(x - y) = x² - y²]

⇒ a² - 1²/a² = 9√85

⇒ a² - 1/a² = 9√85

Therefore the value of a² - 1/a² is 9√85.
