Given:

A = 12 \pm 0.1 \: cm \: and

B = 8.5 \pm 0.5 \: cm

To find:

  • A + B
  • A - B

Calculation:

  • Errors always have to be added irrespective of the operation being done (whether + or -).

A + B = (12 + 8.5) \pm (0.1 + 0.5)

 \implies A + B =20.5 \pm 0.6 \: cm

Now, second part:

A  -  B = (12  -  8.5) \pm (0.1 + 0.5)

 \implies A  -  B =3.5 \pm 0.6 \: cm

Hope It Helps.
