a^2 + 1/a^2 = 102

To find a - 1/a

=>a^2 + 1/a^2 - 2 + 2 = 102

=>a^2 + (1/a)^2 - 2 + 2 = 102

[Now it has become a identity i.e. a^2 + b^2 - 2ab = (a-b)^2]

=>(a - 1/a)^2 + 2 = 102

=>(a - 1/a)^2 = 102 - 2

=>(a - 1/a)^2 = 100

=>a - 1/a = root 100 [whole square will go on right hand side and will become square root]

=>a - 1/a = 10
