Solution :-

a² - b² = 252 and

a + b = 42 ............(1)

a² - b² = 252

a² - b² = (a + b) (a - b)

⇒ (a + b) (a - b) = 252

⇒ 42(a - b) = 252

⇒ a - b = 252/42

⇒ a - b = 6 ................(2)

Adding the equation (1) and (2), we get

a + b = 42

a - b = 6

________

2a = 52

________

⇒ 2a = 52

⇒ a = 52/2

⇒ a = 26

Substituting the value of a = 26 in (1)

⇒ a + b = 42

⇒ 26 + b = 42

⇒ b = 42 - 26

⇒ b = 16

So, the value of b is 16
