Given that : a²-b² = 36 .....(1) and

a-b = 12 .....(2)

As we know that : a²-b² = (a-b)(a+b)

=> 36 = 12(a+b)

=> a+b = 3 .....(3)

Now, on adding (2) and (3) :

2a = 15

=> a = 15/2

On putting the value of a in equation (2) :

15/2 - b = 12

=> b = 15/2 - 12

=> b = -9/2

Now, average of a and b = (a+b)/2

 \frac{ \frac{15}{2} + ( \frac{ - 9}{2})  }{2}  =  \frac{ \frac{15 - 9}{2} }{2}  \\  \\  =  >  \frac{6}{4}

So, the average of a and b will be 6/4
