if a = 2 + root 3 , find a^2 + 1/a^2

a^2=7+4root3
1/a^2=1/7+4root3
=(1/7+4root3)(7-4root3/7-4root3)
since by rationalisation
=7-4root3
a^2+1/a^2=7+4root3+7-4root3
=14
