a=2+ \sqrt{3}
1/a= 1/2+ \sqrt{3}
Therefore, 1/a= \sqrt{3} -2
a-1/a=2+ \sqrt{3}-( \sqrt{3} -2)
        =2+ \sqrt{3}- \sqrt{3}+2
        =4
