Step-by-step explanation:

a = 3 +  \sqrt{2}   \:  \\ b = 3 -  \sqrt{2}

 {a}^{2}  -  {b}^{2}  = (a + b)(a - b)

 =(3 +  \sqrt{2}  + 3 -  \sqrt{2} )(3 +  \sqrt{2}  - 3 +  \sqrt{2} )

 = 6 \times 2 \sqrt{2}

 = 12 \sqrt{2}
