Explanation:

Given: a = 5.0 \pm0.2 \\ and b = 12.0 \pm0.1 \\

To find: Value of b -2 a \\ is

1)2.0 \pm0.3 \\

2)22.0 \pm0.3\\

3)2.0 \pm0.5 \\

4)4.0 \pm0.4 \\

Solution:

Step 1: Multiply a with 2

2a = 2(5.0 \pm0.2)

\bf 2a = 10.0 \pm0.4 \\

Step 2: Subtract 2a from b.

b - 2a = 12.0 \pm0.1 - (10.0 \pm0.4) \\

or

b - 2a = 12.0-10.0 \pm(0.1+0.4)\\

Thus,

b - 2a = 2.0 \pm0.5

Final answer:

\bf b - 2a = 2.0 \pm0.5 \\

Option 3 is correct.

Hope it will help you.

Given : a = 5.0 ± 0.2

b = 12.0 ±   0.1

To Find :  b -  2a

Solution:

a = 5.0 ± 0.2

=> 2a = 2 (5.0 ± 0.2)

=> 2a = 10.0   ± 0.4

b = 12.0 ±   0.1

b - 2a  = 12.0 ±   0.1  - ( 10.0   ± 0.4)

= 12.0 - 10.0  ±   (0.1  + 0.4)

( Note : Tolerances/Errors are always Added up )

=  2.0  ±  0.5

b -  2a =  2.0  ±  0.5

correct answer is 2.0  ± 0.5

Additional Info :

even if operation was  b + 2a  still error would have been 0.5

b + 2a  = 22.0  ±  0.5
