a = 6 - √35

1/a = 1/(6 - √35)   [Rationalize 6 - √35]

     = 6 + √35

∴  (a + 1/a)² = (6 - √35 + 6 + √35 )²    ..........[ put values of a and 1/a]

  • a² + 2*a*1/a + 1/a² = (12)² ......... [ use (a+b)² identity]
  • a² + 1/a² = 144 - 2  .......... [Transpose 2]
  • a² + 1/a² = 142

hence your answer is 142

Hope this helps :)

vishalsaini28feb: the ans is 142
aparnahc: yes it is ....thanks for the correction
