$a=8+3 \sqrt{7}$   

$\frac{1}{a} = \frac{1}{8+3 \sqrt{7}}$   (rationalize the denominator)
 
                  $= \frac{1}{8+3 \sqrt{7}}$ ×$\frac{8-3 \sqrt{7}}{8-3 \sqrt{7}}$

                  $= \frac{8-3 \sqrt{7}}{64 - 63}$
  
∴   $\frac{1}{a} =8-3 \sqrt{7}$  

So, 

$(a+ \frac{1}{a} )^{2} = (8+3 \sqrt{7} + 8 - 3 \sqrt{7})^{2}$
      
                                $= 16^{2}$
  
                                $= 256$
