common difference is always equal in AP

so

(a-2) - a = 3a - (a-2)

a -2 -a = 3a- a +2

-2 -2 = 2a

-4 = 2a

a = -2

Explanation:

Since they are in AP

Therefore the common difference will definitely be same, i.e., (a-2)-a= 3a-(a-2)

a-2-a = 3a-a+2

-2 = 2a+2

2a= -4

a= -4/2 = -2..
