Solution: Given: a, (a - 2) and 3a are in AP As we know, if a, b and c are in AP then 2b = a + c ⇒ 2(a - 2) = a + 3a ⇒ 2a - 4 = 4a ⇒ 4a- 2a = - 4 ⇒ 2a = - 4 ∴ a= -2

Given, a, (a - 2) and 3a are in AP Hence a2 - a1 = a3 - a2 ⇒ (a - 2) - a = 3a - (a - 2) ⇒ a - 2 - a = 3a - a + 2 ⇒ - 2 = 2a + 2 ⇒ - 4 = 2a ∴ a = - 2
