Using the identity a^2+b^2

(a+b)^2 =(17)^2

(a^2+b^2 + 2ab) =(17)^2

a^2+b^2*26= 289

a^2+b^2 +52=289

a^2+b^2= 289-52

Thus, a^2+b^2= 237
