If (a+b)2 = 361 and ab=-120 calculate the value of a2+b2

we know that
(a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2
thus applying this we get....

361 = a^2 + 2 (-120) + b^2...
361= a^2 + b^2 -240
there fore.....

a^2 + b^2 = 361 + 240
= 601....

We have,

(a + b)² = a² + b² + 2ab

361 = a² + b² + 2 × (-120)

361 = a² + b² - 240
