a-b = 3

=> a= 8

=>b= 5

a-b=3 and ab=40

b= 40/a

put the value in 1 st equation

a-40/a=3

a^2-40=3a

a^2-3a-40

above equation is quadratic equation

hence

a^2-8a+5a-40

a( a-8)+5(a-8)

(a+5)(a-8)

a=-5 or 8
