Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

a=3+b {from the question }---------1

ab=40--------------2

substitute 1  in 2 we get

(3+b)b=40

b²+3b-40=0

b²+8b-5b-40=0

b(b+8)-5(b+8)=0

(b+8)(b-5)=0

so, b=-8 and 5

if b=-8 then a=-5

if b=5 then a=8

so, a²+b²=(8)²+(5)²=64+25=89

      (or)

a²+b²=(-5)²+(-8)²=25+64=89

both the values gives the same answer
