my friend we know that ,
 (a+b)^2 = a^2+ b^2 +2ab
a^2+b^2 = (a+b)^2 -2ab

substituting the value we get ,  

a^2+ b^2 = (5)^2-2(6)
=25-12
=13 is the answer
