Given : a + b = 7 and ab = 12.

To find : value of  a² + b².

 Solution :

 By using an identity (a + b)² = a² + b² + 2ab

On Squaring a + b = 7 both sides we get :

 (a + b)² = 7²

(a)² + (b)² + 2 × a × b = 49

a² + b² + 2ab = 49

a² + b² + 2(12)= 49

[ab = 12]

a² + b² + 24 = 49

a² + b² = 49 -24

a² + b² = 25

Hence the value of a² + b² is 25.
