a+b = 9

ab = 18

a² + b² = (a+b)² - 2 ab

= 9² - 2 x 18

= 81 - 36

= 45

Again

a²+b²=(a-b)²+2 ab

⇒ 45 = (a-b)² + 2 x 18

⇒ (a-b)² = 45-36

⇒ (a-b)² = 9

∴ a-b = 3
