given:

a + b = 9

ab =  - 22

we \: know \: that

(a - b) {}^{2}  = (a + b) {}^{2}  - 4ab

so \:  \: (a - b)

 =  \sqrt{81 - ( - 88)}

(a - b) \:  =  \sqrt{169}

 = 13
