GIVEN:

 a+b+c=-1

ab + bc+ca =-4

TO FIND:

The \:value \:of\: a^{2}+b^{2}+c^{2}

SOLUTION:

WE HAVE,

=> a+b+c=-1

On squaring both sides, we have;

=> (a+b+c) ^{2}=(-1)^{2}

=>(a+b+c)^{2}=-1

=>a^{2}+b^{2}+c^{2}+2(ab+bc+ca)=1

=>a^{2}+b^{2}+c^{2}+2(-4)=1

(given)

=>a^{2}+b^{2}+c^{2}-8 =1

=>a^{2}+b^{2}+c^{2} =(1+8)

=>a^{2}+b^{2}+c^{2} =9

Hence,a^{2}+b^{2}+c^{2}=9
