Actually, when a body is projected upwards, the only force acting on it once it is released is gravitational force, and the only acceleration is caused by gravity, and is downwards. When you project a body, it must have some initial velocity. Using the equation of motion,

v=v0+at

we can say that if a body is projected with a certain initial velocity, with acceleration in the opposite direction, then it still travels in the direction of initial velocity, till it's velocity turns to zero

Note that while it is in the air the acceleration of the ball remains the same even though the velocity changes. It is −g when it leaves the hand, −g when it stops instantaneously at the top of its flight, and −g when it hits the ground. That is because the force on the ball mg remains constant (neglecting air resistance and the variation in gravity with distance from the centre of the Earth).
