If  a  bar  magnet  is  suspended  vertically  it  does  not  hang
in  the  north-south  direction.

A freely suspended Bar magnet comes to  rest in the N_S direction because
--->The alignment of a freely suspended particles in magnet are influenced by Earth's magnetic field.
---> Earth is assumed to be a huge strong magnet with its south pole near its Geographical North pole and North pole at its Geographical south pole.
--> Hence when suspended freely  the North pole of magnet points towards geographic north and south pole of bar magnet points Geographic south pole. 

If bar magnet is suspended vertically , then it remains at rest ... Because magnetic particles alignment will not come in effect of earth's magnetic field.
