Let the original velocity be 'u'. Using equations of motion,

=> v² = u² + 2aS, for situation when body loses 1/2 velocity, new velocity = u - u/2 = u/2.

=> (u/2)² = u² + 2a(3cm)

=> u²/4 - u² = 2a(0.03 m)

=> - 3u²/4 = 0.06 a

=> - 12.5u² = a

Hence, when body comes to rest,

=> 0 = (u/2)² + 2(12.5u²) S

=> u²/4 = 25u²S

=> 1/100m = S

=> 1/100 *100 cm= S

=> 1 cm = S
