The work done will be in the form of potential energy. As the displacement is in the direction opposite to the force acting i.e gravitational force, the work done will be negative.

W = -mgh

W = -5*9.8*1

W = -49 Joules

-49J

Explanation:

IMPORTANT KEYWORDS :

WORK IS SAID TO BE DONE WHEN A FORCE IS APPLIED ON BODY AND THE BODY UNDERGOES DISPLACEMENT.

WORK IS ALSO THE PRODUCT OF THE FORCE AND DISPLACEMENT.

S. I UNIT OF WORK IS JOULE.

______________________________________

WORK = FORCE × DISPLACEMENT.

IN THIS CASE >>>

FORCE = ?

DISPLACEMENT = 1m.

MASS = 5Kg.

NOW, FORCE = MASS × ACCELERATION.

ACCELERATION WHICH IS ACTING ON A GENERAL BODY IS = ACCELERATION DUE TO GRAVITY = g = 9.8m/s^2

THEREFORE IF WE CALCULATE FORCE APPLIED ON THIS BODY ---->>

FORCE = 5 × -9.8

 = 49n

NOW WORK DONE ON BODY = 49 × 1

= -49 JOULE.
