• A slight error in this sentence prevents us from truly believing that the correct answer is 4 apples. This could most probably be a logic question and be that the answer is 4 but based on the structure and what is asked it could be anything.
• We could assume that by gaining one it could be talking about an apple he gained before and there the answer would still be three.
• Gaining 1 could also be that he got paid 1 rupee and therefore ould have 2 apples.
• Gaining one could also mean that the person gained another apple and therefore he has 4 apples, the common answer.
• However, what causes doubt is the ambiguity of what he gained and how it could play out when answering the question.
