the velocity is negative, that means the velocity is in the opposite to the direction in which the bus is moving. And to do that, acceleration will have to be IN the direction of motion of the bus(yes, that can happen) since you mention it is slowing down. therefore, since the direction of velocity is negative, the acceleration which is opposing it must be POSITIVE.
to REDUCE a POSITIVE velocity, the acceleration must be NEGATIVE.
to REDUCE a POSITIVE velocity, the acceleration must be NEGATIVE.
