A carbon compound would be categorized as unsaturated if it has the tendency to allow addition into itself under any condition.
For example, CO has a triple bond. H2 is added into it with the help of catalyst to make HCHO (formaldehyde) industrially, vide Oxo Process. Hence CO is unsaturated.
