because oxygen has valency 2 and because there are 3 oxygens the valency/oxidation number of X must have been 6

The compound is XO₃. Which means that the compound must disassociate as X⁶⁺ + 3O₂⁻ because the valency of oxygen is (-2) therefore,by crisscross method, the compound formed will be XO₃
