The number added to both is 6.

  • Given fraction is 9/17 .
  • When a certain number is added to the numerator and the denominator , the fraction is reduced to 5/7.
  • Let us consider the number to be 'x'.
  • Now according to the condition given,

\frac{9+x}{17+x} = \frac{5}{7}

Cross multiplying both sides,

63 + 7x= 85 + 5x

2x = 12

x = 6

  • The number added to numerator and denominator is 6.
