If a globule of water of diameter 2 cm suddenly splits into 1000 equal globules under isothermal conditions, determine the gain in
surface energy which occurs. Given that the surface tension of water is 75.dyne/cm.

Answer:
since after breaking the drop the total surface area increase and hence surface energy increases , the increament in surface energy is equal to work done in breaking the drop which is given by W = 4 π( R) ^ 2 T ( n^1/3 - 1)
here R radius of original drop , given R = 1 cm , T surface tension , n = final number of drops = 1000 . now putting the values in above equation we get the gain in surface energy..
