Simplify it

1-1/a=3
1-3=1/a
1/a=-2
a=-1/2
Therefore a=-1/2 substitute to get above two sums

(1) a^2+1/a^2=(-1/2)^2+1/(-1/2)^2
=1/4+4
=17/4
=4.25

(2)a^3-1/a^3=(-1/2)^3-1/(-1/2)^3
=-1/8+8
=64-1/8
=63/8
=7.875
