Here, end of the question says that Apple is +8 more than Tomato or Lemon...

It means Tomato and Lemon are not same cost..

3 1

Tomato + Lemon = 4

&

Lemon + Apple = 12

1 11

If you put Tomato = 3 & Lemon = 1

so.. Apple = 11

then it is said that Apple is +8 more than Tomato instead of Lemon..

Answer:

1st and 3rd options are correct.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

Cost of lemon and apple = Rs. 12

Cost of lemon and tomato = Rs. 4

Cost of an apple is 8 more than lemon or tomato.

To find: Cost of lemon.

let l represent cost of lemon , a represent cost of apple and t represent cost of tomato.

According tot he question,

l + a = 12 ......................(1)

t + l = 4 ...........................(2)

a = 8 + t   or   a = 8 + l

Clearly cost of tomato and lemon is not same.

from (2),

only possible value of t and l are 3 , 1 or 1 , 3

when t = 1 and l = 3

a = 8 + t = 8 + 1 = 9

a + l = 12

but if a = 8 + l = 8 + 3 = 11

so, from (2)

a + l ≠ 12

Similarly,

when t = 3 and l = 1

a = 8 + t = 8 + 3 = 11

a + l = 12

but if a = 8 + l = 8 + 1 = 9

so, from (2)

a + l ≠ 12

So, Apple is 8 more than tomato not the apple.

⇒ Cost of lemon can be 3 or 1.

Therefore, 1st and 3rd options are correct.
