this is because when a person stands on the chair, the area of contact is less and hence the pressure( force per unit area) is high which causes the chair to break.

but when a person sits on the chair, the area of contact between the person and the chair increase, thus decreasing the pressure (force per unit area). this prohibits the breaking of the chair
