To form 2 equations we need to know whether “y” is

greater than 50 or less than 50 as while subtracting

the paisa amount from the paisa amount there will be

no carry over in the first case and will be in the latter.

Doing a little analysis we can find that x has to be

less than 50( as otherwise the amount left will have

100 paisa or more in the paisa section). And hence

2y<50 as the amount left over has to be less than 50.

Thus y<50.

So the equations can be

y + 100 * – 50 = 2x

y + 50 = 2x…………(1)

*carry over from the rupee side

x – 1* – 3 = 2y

x-4 =2y…………….(2)

* carried over to the paisa side

Solving (1) and (2) we find x= 32 and y =14. So the

initial amount was Rs. 32.14.
