If a proton is placed in a uniform electric field, what would be the magnitude of the field if the electrostatic force acting on the proton is just to balance its weight? (take g as 9.8 m/s2, e as 1.60×10-19C and mass of proton as 1.67×10-27kg)

Answer:

E = 1.08 ×10^{-7}

Explanation:

Mass of proton (m) = 1.67 ×10^{-27} kg

Charge on proton (Q) = 1.60 ×10^{-19} C

Now , force on proton due to an electric field (F ) = QE

This force must balance the weight of the proton.

So, F = mg

or QE = mg

So, E = mg/Q

or E = 1.67 ×10^{-27} kg × 9.8/ 1.60 ×10^{-19} C

E = 1.08 ×10^{-7}
